Het is een Middeleeuws handelsstadje. Ve\u00f8ya betekent \u2018heilig eiland\u2019, er zijn sporen te vinden van pre-Christelijke culturen. Ook vind je er graven uit de 9<sup>e<\/sup> eeuw; de oudste Christelijk graven in Noorwegen, een stenen kerk uit de 11<sup>e<\/sup> eeuw en een domineeswoning uit 1750. Door de ligging is dit eiland al lange tijd gebruikt als een belangrijk punt voor handel en zeevaart. Het eiland is de moeite waard als je een liefhebber bent van geschiedenis, cultuur en archeologie. In de zomer vaart er een ferry tussen Molde en Ve\u00f8ya.
