Trollstigen
The Stairway of the Trolls: Trollstigen is an impressive mountain pass that climbs up the steep slope of the Romsdalen Valley through 11 hairpin bends. It is 1 of Norway's most impressive tourist routes, and that's saying something! You pass several waterfalls and enjoy spectacular views of the valley below. Arriving at the top, the road crosses a plateau.
You will also find a tourist centre with great views here. Trollstigen is part of road number 63 from Åndalsnes to the south. It is about 20 km long. If you drive the route in May or June, the plateau sometimes still has up to two metres of snow along the road. This is very impressive.
Trollstigen is usually open from mid-May until the first snow in autumn. Check before you go if the road is open if you take it early or late in the season. Drive via Vestnes and the E136 to Åndalsnes. From there, take the 63 to Trollstigen. Continue on the 63 to Sylte. From there, take the 650 and E39 back to the flats. It is recommended to drive the route via this side, as climbing Trollstigen is more spectacular than the descent.
